An Italian Hero in the Albanian War

      Il battaglione Gramsci in Albania

Back in 1940, in war-torn Albania, a man named Antonio Forchione found himself a prisoner in the hands of Albanian soldiers. His determination and indomitable spirit made him a symbol of resistance in a context of dark despair. During a reconnaissance of the guards guarding the Albanian prison, he managed to sneak into the prison armoury and, with a stroke of genius, stole a machine gun. Hidden behind the cell blocks, Antonio prepared to fight like a lion, firing at his enemies with a fury that left everyone stunned. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

His Italian comrades, incredulous and frightened, ordered him to surrender, but Antonio, stubborn and proud, continued to return fire, refusing to bow to his captivity. His audacity did not go unnoticed, and the Albanian soldiers decided to resort to any method to disarm him. They lit a fire and, enveloping Antonio in thick smoke, deprived him of consciousness. When he awoke, he found himself a second time a prisoner, surrounded by enemies who considered him a war trophy.

The living conditions for him and the other prisoners were inhuman. The Albanians tied the Italians to each other, humiliating them as they were displayed as war trophies. They threw potato peels at them, and when they bent down to pick them up, they were beaten mercilessly. In one of these squares, Antonio, while trying to get up, fell down the stairs and was injured. The other prisoners, seeing him on the ground, thought he had had an epileptic fit.

After a long period of suffering, Antonio was finally sent back to Italy, where he was admitted to the military hospital in Bari. His wife, Maria Pagnello, did not give up. With makeshift means, she travelled from Orsara di Puglia to visit him eighteen times, bringing with her some comfort and hope. Her presence represented a beacon of light in the dark reality of Antonio's life, who, despite his precarious physical and psychological condition, felt invigorated by the love of his bride.

However, fate seemed to have not stopped playing with him. Despite the wounds and scars on his soul, Antonio was sent back to the front, once again to Albania. The war had not yet subsided, and the call of duty led him to return to a place that had marked him forever. But in him burned an indomitable flame, a desire for freedom and justice that, even in the face of horror, would never be extinguished. His story continues to be a tale of resilience and love, an epic of a man who, against all odds, refused to surrender and submit to the fate of being defeated.

Today, in Canada and in Orsara di Puglia, live the heirs of that story of courage and resilience. The daughter of Antonio Forchione and Maria Pagnello, Mrs Rocchina carries the weight and honour of a legacy rooted in a tumultuous past. Rocchina has immersed herself in history, collecting documents, photographs and stories from those who lived through those difficult years. Each piece of that mosaic allows her to understand not only the pain and suffering of the past, but also the love that drove Antonio and Maria to build their family in spite of adversity.

Over the years, Rocchina decided to share her father's story. Today, as she walks the streets of Orsara, Rocchina feels part of something bigger. She knows that her father's determination and her mother's love are not just a memory, but a guide to face life's challenges. And so, with a heart full of gratitude and passion, she continues to carry on the witness of a story of hope, an unbreakable bond between past and present. Passing on this story of love and courage to future generations. Starting with the children of his brothers living in Canada. Bound with strength and desire to their homeland. In particular, Antonietta Forchione, who continually returns to Orsara di Puglia, to search, together with her aunt, for the traces of her roots and that hope that allowed Antonio to return alive to his homeland and create the future through the eyes and smiles of his children, his nieces and nephews, and the other children and nieces and nephews who will come in the future generations to come.
