The Samari canal (or Samari ditch) is a watercourse in the province of Lecce.
With its 7 kilometers of length, it is the largest watercourse in the lower Salento. It originates from various branches in the Salento greenhouses and flows between the beaches of Baia Verde and Foggi south of Gallipoli. The Gallipoli natural park starts from its mouth. Once its bed was abundant with water and its banks rich in vegetation.
The stream, in fact, is characterised by a thick reed bed, shortly after receiving the waters of the Raho canal which flows in the territory of Taviano, it passes by the ancient church of San Pietro dei Samari and the Bosco dei Foggi, a pine forest of Aleppo pine.
The mouth was once characterised by high dunes that often blocked its waters, resulting in the overflowing of the river into the surrounding areas, forming the large Li Foggi marsh.
Today you can admire wonderful white swans along its course.
