    Maria Antonia Scalera Stellini, or the Apulian poetic eighteenth century

    samari copia 2 scaled

    Maria Antonia Scalera Stellini is an emblematically significant figure in the history of Italian literature, not only for her poetic talent, but also for her courage in challenging the social conventions of her time. Born in Acquaviva delle Fonti in the 17th century, Scalera Stellini is often considered a forerunner of feminism. Her work, “Li divertimento poetici”, as well as numerous theatrical works, reflect a deep awareness of the power of writing and the need to assert women’s right to artistic expression.

    Despite adversity, including an arranged marriage and life’s challenges, Scalera Stellini persevered in her passion for writing. Her membership in the Accademia dell’Arcadia, a predominantly male environment, is a clear sign of her determination and ability to make her way in a male-dominated literary world. Her choice to publish her works under her maiden name and not use pseudonyms is a gesture of great modernity and independence.

    Her life and work represent a struggle against the limitations imposed on women, emphasizing the difficulty of reconciling family responsibilities with artistic aspirations. Despite the recognition she obtained during her life, Scalera Stellini fell into oblivion after her death, partly due to a selection of works that excluded her from the literary panorama of the eighteenth century.

    Today, her contribution is recognized as an important milestone in the history of women’s literature, testifying to a sensibility that paved the way for future generations of writers and activists. Her legacy lives on, inspiring movements of women’s associations and gender equality in the field of culture.

    Una selezione delle sue poesie più belle in Italian

    Nell’annunciazione della B. Vergine

    Spandea su l’ombre a l’hor pur oro eletto
    Del dì la nunzia, quando eterno amante
    I rai fissò di sacro amor festante
    In donzella real, sotto humil tetto.

    Alato un paraninfo il più perfetto
    Al grand’ufficio elesse; in un istante

    Ave eccheggiare a sì gran madre, e figlia,
    MARIA madre d’un Dio, d’un Dio fattura.

    La  Madalena pentita

    Momentanea beltà, fasti fugaci
    Folli speranze io vi detesto addio;
    Fregi rei, pompe vane; ite in oblio
    Sensi del cor con sicarî, empi, e fallaci.

    Vi lascio auree catene, ostri tenaci;
    E tu del mio fallir complice rio
    Vil crin ti sciolgo, e tra tuoi flutti or’io
    Dar spero in mar di pianto al porto i baci.

    Su si corra pentita, ah non discaccia
    Alma che riede a Dio, ma tutto ardore
    D’alma rubella segue ancor la traccia.

    Vengo, che senza te m’uccide amore;
    Ché per placar la tua sdegnata faccia
    Accuso il fallo, ed ho contrito il core.

    Nell’annunziatione  della B. Vergine

    Arsero gli astri, e taciturno amante
    Venne il Verbo, qual sole, in humil petto.
    E in dar MARIA al suo splendor ricetto,
    Ogn’angelico cor mutò sembiante.

    Vn araldo dal cielo ad un istante,
    In bianco vel dal gran monarca eletto
    Raro nunzio fedel, d’alto concetto.
    Genuflesso adorò l’humil regnante.

    Ombra germe di fallo ingordo, e stolto,
    Morte, ch’atterri ogn’un, voi anche ecclissi,
    Agevolate il piè, fermarvi è tolto.

    Regia prole de’ cieli erranti, e fissi
    Invincibil si prova; il puro volto
    Allegra i cieli, e fa tremar gli abissi.
