      Ofanto (River)

      ofa scaled 1 scaled

The Ofanto is the most important river in Puglia, with its 134 km total course.

The Latin name was Aufidus: aute fides (from which sine fide or vel infidus), this was due to the dangerousness of the course.

Others propose a Greek etymology: Aufidus which derives from the Greek ὄφις which means snake. The river, in fact, outlines the shape of a long snake.

In ancient Rome, the river was celebrated several times by the poet Horace. Especially after the infamous battle of Cannae, fought around the river.
