      The Linden Tree in Puglia

      tiglo scaled 1 scaled

The lime tree (Tilia) is a genus of tree or shrub plant of the Tiliaceae family.

In Italy there are the wild lime tree and the local lime tree which, through crossbreeding, have given rise to various hybrids. The lime tree is a very resistant and long-lived tree. Its heart-shaped leaves with serrated edges are bright green, while its scented flowers are yellow-green and attract many pollinating insects.

Bees appreciate it and give exquisite honey. Flowering occurs between June and July depending on the altitude. The flowers, rich in polyphenols, essential oil and mucilage, are used as anti-inflammatories and to calm anxiety. Multiplication occurs by seed or even by sucker, which produces abundantly at the base of the stem.

In Maglie, you can see this tree in many suggestive places, in the ancient villas of the historic center or near the train station, with a tree-lined avenue dotted with vigorous lime trees. In June, with the flowering, you can breathe an inebriating scent that excites passers-by and train passengers, leaning out of the windows in an attempt to take with them the last scent of Puglia.
