Back in 1940, in war-torn Albania, a man named Antonio Forchione found himself a prisoner in the hands of Albanian soldiers. His determination and indomitable spirit made him a symbol of resistance in a context of dark despair. During a reconnaissance of the guards guarding the Albanian prison, he managed to sneak into the prison armoury and, with a stroke of genius, stole a machine gun. Hidden behind the cell blocks, Antonio prepared to fight like a lion, firing at his enemies with a fury that left everyone stunned.

Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

His Italian comrades, incredulous and frightened, ordered him to surrender, but Antonio, stubborn and proud, continued to return fire, refusing to bow to his captivity. His audacity did not go unnoticed, and the Albanian soldiers decided to resort to any method to disarm him. They lit a fire and, enveloping Antonio in thick smoke, deprived him of consciousness. When he awoke, he found himself a second time a prisoner, surrounded by enemies who considered him a war trophy.

The living conditions for him and the other prisoners were inhuman. The Albanians tied the Italians to each other, humiliating them as they were displayed as war trophies. They threw potato peels at them, and when they bent down to pick them up, they were beaten mercilessly. In one of these squares, Antonio, while trying to get up, fell down the stairs and was injured. The other prisoners, seeing him on the ground, thought he had had an epileptic fit.

After a long period of suffering, Antonio was finally sent back to Italy, where he was admitted to the military hospital in Bari. His wife, Maria Pagnello, did not give up. With makeshift means, she travelled from Orsara di Puglia to visit him eighteen times, bringing with her some comfort and hope. Her presence represented a beacon of light in the dark reality of Antonio's life, who, despite his precarious physical and psychological condition, felt invigorated by the love of his bride.

However, fate seemed to have not stopped playing with him. Despite the wounds and scars on his soul, Antonio was sent back to the front, once again to Albania. The war had not yet subsided, and the call of duty led him to return to a place that had marked him forever. But in him burned an indomitable flame, a desire for freedom and justice that, even in the face of horror, would never be extinguished. His story continues to be a tale of resilience and love, an epic of a man who, against all odds, refused to surrender and submit to the fate of being defeated.

Today, in Canada and in Orsara di Puglia, live the heirs of that story of courage and resilience. The daughter of Antonio Forchione and Maria Pagnello, Mrs Rocchina carries the weight and honour of a legacy rooted in a tumultuous past. Rocchina has immersed herself in history, collecting documents, photographs and stories from those who lived through those difficult years. Each piece of that mosaic allows her to understand not only the pain and suffering of the past, but also the love that drove Antonio and Maria to build their family in spite of adversity.

Over the years, Rocchina decided to share her father's story. Today, as she walks the streets of Orsara, Rocchina feels part of something bigger. She knows that her father's determination and her mother's love are not just a memory, but a guide to face life's challenges. And so, with a heart full of gratitude and passion, she continues to carry on the witness of a story of hope, an unbreakable bond between past and present. Passing on this story of love and courage to future generations. Starting with the children of his brothers living in Canada. Bound with strength and desire to their homeland. In particular, Antonietta Forchione, who continually returns to Orsara di Puglia, to search, together with her aunt, for the traces of her roots and that hope that allowed Antonio to return alive to his homeland and create the future through the eyes and smiles of his children, his nieces and nephews, and the other children and nieces and nephews who will come in the future generations to come.

Casamassima, the “Blue Village”, presents itself as an authentic jewel of Puglia, nestled among the wonderful Murge Baresi. Its white streets, made of limestone, are flanked by houses painted in an intense blue, which almost recall the shades of Chefchaouen, better known as the blue pearl of Morocco. A tradition that dates back to the 17th century when the lord Michele Vaaz decided to color the houses as a sign of devotion to the Madonna of Constantinople.

The history of Casamassima is rich in legends, including one that attributes the blue color to a community of Sephardic Jews who brought this tradition with them. Today, the municipal administration encourages the maintenance of this characteristic appearance, offering concessions to those who choose to paint their homes in blue.

The village is deeply linked to its history, with emblematic places such as the Porta dell’Orologio and the Chiesa Matrice di Santa Croce, which houses precious works of art. The “chiassi”, small dead-end streets, add a unique charm to the place, some of which, like the Chiasso delle Ombre, are surrounded by ghost stories.

The gastronomy of Casamassima reflects the peasant traditions of Puglia, with typical dishes such as orecchiette with cabbage and anchovies, and cavatelli with chickpeas. Local festivities, such as the Pentolaccia di Carnevale and the Corteo Storico di Corrado IV di Svevia, perfectly represent the love of the inhabitants for their traditions.

Visiting Casamassima means immersing yourself in a magical atmosphere, where the white of the stones and the blue of the walls create a fascinating contrast, making this village a corner of Puglia not to be missed.

Vanze is a small hamlet in the municipality of Vernole, located in the province of Lecce. With a population of 255 inhabitants and a history that dates back to the early Middle Ages, during the Byzantine era. Founded thanks to the arrival of settlers, the village has seen the development of an economic activity mainly based on agriculture and sheep farming over the centuries. Starting from the 11th century, Vanze became part of the County of Lecce, following its historical vicissitudes until the Orsini period. Subsequently, the fiefdom passed under the control of the Pagano family and, from the beginning of the 17th century until the abolition of feudalism, it was governed by the Maiorano family. With the unification of Italy in 1866 and the end of Bourbon rule, Vanze was aggregated to the Municipality of Vernole, together with other hamlets such as Acaja, Acquarica di Lecce, Pisignano and Strudà.

The Church of Maria SS. Assunta is a religious building dating back to the 18th century, which underwent a renovation of the facade in 1930. The church is dedicated to the Virgin of the Assumption and represents the main place of worship for the inhabitants of Vanze.

The Baronial Palace, dating back to the 16th century, is characterised by a large rusticated portal and includes a fortified tower house, a distinctive element of its architecture.

The Monumental Gate dates back to the 15th-16th centuries and was renovated in the late 1990s. It is thought that it may have been part of a pre-existing fortified building or the walls of a now destroyed city. The façade facing the sea has a simple single arch, while the one facing the town is characterised by a segmental arch. In the upper part, the remains of a border that once covered the entire perimeter of the gate are still visible.

The history of Strudà has its roots in the Bronze Age, with evidence of settlements dating back to Roman times. The toponym Strudà derives from the Latin term Struthea, which refers to a variety of wild quince that grows spontaneously in the surrounding countryside. Over the centuries, the fiefdom of Strudà has passed from hand to hand, initially incorporated into the County of Lecce by Tancredi d’Altavilla and subsequently under the lordship of the Orsini Del Balzo. In 1591, the fiefdom was sold to the Pagano family, then passed to the Saluzzo family in 1607 and subsequently to the Esperti family. Thanks to the latter family, the ducal palace underwent significant renovation. With the marriage between Margherita Vittoria Esperti and Andrea Saraceno di Montemesola, the palace and the fiefdom remained in the family until the abolition of feudalism in 1806. With the unification of Italy in 1866, Strudà was aggregated to the Municipality of Vernole.

The Esperti-Saraceni Palace has a rich and fascinating history, beginning in the 15th century with its construction by the Esperti barons, well-known patrons of the arts. In the 16th century, the palace was expanded with Renaissance elements, such as the rusticated portal and the internal courtyard. In the 18th century, the palace was inherited by the Saraceno family, who made further changes, including the addition of a Baroque balcony.

The Strudà convent, founded in 1498 by the Discalced Franciscans, was dedicated to preaching and helping the needy. Consisting of a church, a cloister and a library, the convent enjoyed a period of splendor until the 17th century, when it was suppressed in 1650. Today, only a few ruins remain, witnesses to its ancient importance.

The Strudà Well, located in the main square, is a replica of the 16th-century fountain that was destroyed in 1958. Decorated with baroque motifs, the well is dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, the patron saint of Strudà, and is a symbol of the community. Devotion to Our Lady of the Snows dates back to 1498, when it is said that it snowed in Strudà, an extraordinary event for the region. The well not only provided water, but was also a place of social and spiritual gathering for the inhabitants.

The Mother Church of Santa Maria ad Nives is the main place of worship in the hamlet, whose current structure dates back to the 16th century restoration. The church has a simple but elegant façade, with statues of the apostles Peter and Paul. The interior, with a single nave, houses several altars dedicated to various Madonnas and saints.

Acquarica di Lecce is a historic and fascinating hamlet that is part of the municipality of Vernole, in the province of . With a population of about a thousand inhabitants, it represents one of the five hamlets that make up the territory of Vernole.

Among the places of interest in Acquarica di Lecce, the Mother Church of San Gregorio Nazianzeno stands out, built in 1904 by Monsignor Leone Greco on the site of an old church. It preserves the bell tower dating back to 1525 and two precious paintings depicting the Madonna del Rosario and San Gregorio Nazianzeno. The facade, in neoclassical style, is characterized by Corinthian pilasters and a decorated tympanum. Inside, the church has a rectangular plan with a single nave and several side chapels.

Other churches of interest include the Chapel of the Madonna della Pietà, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, and the Chapel of the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, rebuilt in the 20th century. An important testimony to the military history of the village is the Castle, built in 1549 by the architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya on commission from the Baron of Acquarica, Giovanni Maria Guarino. This fortified structure was intended to defend the village from Turkish invasions and has notable architectural features, such as the precious floor and the watchtower.

Finally, it is worth mentioning the monument dedicated to San Gregorio Nazianzeno, inaugurated in 2003, and the archaeological site of Pozzo Seccato, which offers a glimpse of Messapian life and its fortified structures. This settlement, dating back to the 4th century BC, is surrounded by an imposing wall and has various rooms dedicated to daily life and craftsmanship.

Pisignano is a charming hamlet that is part of the municipality of Vernole, located in the province of Lecce. This town has a population of just under 1000 inhabitants. Its history is steeped in significant events that date back to ancient times, in particular to the Norman period, when the area began to develop as an important agricultural settlement.

The community has experienced several crucial moments, marked by changes in power among local nobles and the presence of subversive figures during the first uprisings of the Risorgimento. In 1822, some inhabitants of the hamlet were reported as subversives, including Raffaele Stella and Don Vito Antonucci, a priest.

Among the main attractions of Pisignano, the mother church dedicated to Santa Maria Mater Domini stands out. This sacred building, which dates back to the 12th century, represents a notable example of Romanesque architecture, even though over the centuries it has undergone modifications in Baroque style between the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. The church houses an important effigy of the Virgin, a valuable work painted on stone dating back to 1500. The façade, built in typical Lecce stone, is adorned with Doric pilasters and culminates in a tympanum that houses a niche containing the statue of Santa Severina. Inside, the church has an imposing Latin cross structure with four side altars, dedicated respectively to the Madonna del Rosario, the Souls of Purgatory, Saint Anthony of Padua and the Virgin Mary. Next to the church stands the Menhir Mater Domini.

Vernole, or Spring among the Olive TreesRead More

Vernole is a municipality in the province of Lecce, in the heart of Salento. The name of the town, according to local historian Eugenio De Carlo, could derive from the Latin verb “verno”, which means “to sprout” or “to be spring”, reflecting the climatic characteristics of the area. Traditionally, it is believed that the name could also mean “spring among the olive trees”, in reference to the predominant presence of olive trees in the local landscape. A true Japanese haiku.

The origins of Vernole date back to the Bronze Age, with the presence of indigenous populations in the Acquarica–Acaya–Pisignano triangle (today hamlets belonging to the municipality of Vernole) where megalithic monuments were found. Significant traces date back to the Messapian period, with archaeological excavations that revealed in the Pozzo Seccato area, a fortified farmhouse from the 4th century BC. One of the first farmhouses in Salento. Among those known, certainly the oldest.

The first written information about Vernole dates back to 1115, when Goffredo, Count of Lecce, donated half of the hamlet of Vernole to the Bishop of Lecce for the restoration of the main church. This donation was confirmed by Constance of Altavilla in 1195. Due to the Saracen raids, the inhabitants moved to the current site, leaving only the ruins of the current church of San Lorenzo.

The town experienced a revolutionary episode in 1961 during the municipal elections. After a draw and accusations of poisoning against a municipal councilor, members of the Communist Party blocked access to the town hall for days. With the arrival of the prefect and a mayor appointed by the prefect, the town returned to the control of the state authority.

Among the monuments to visit, the Church of Maria Santissima Assunta, built in 1730 on the ruins of a previous building. Typical example of Lecce Baroque, with a richly decorated façade and a Latin cross interior that preserves Baroque altars.

The Church of Sant'Anna, built between 1673 and 1680, has a simple and linear façade, while the interior is decorated in Baroque style and houses an altarpiece depicting Saint Anna.

The Church of the Visitation, with frescoes and altarpieces inside, and the Church of San Lorenzo, the oldest evidence of the original Casale di Vernole.

A few kilometers from the city center lies the Riserva Naturale Statale delle Cesine. Located along the Adriatic coast, it represents one of the last marshy areas in the region and is home to a variety of plant and animal species, many of which are in danger of extinction.

One of the characteristics of Vernole is its constellation of hamlets. So much so that it has received the ironic nickname of United States of Vernole. It has five of them: Acaya, Acquarica di Lecce, Pisignano, Strudà and Vanze.

Pozzo Seccato is considered the first masseria in the history of Salento, dating back to the 4th century BC during the Messapian era. This settlement was completely surrounded by a sturdy fortification, with a dry stone wall almost 4 meters thick, covered externally with large, perfectly squared monolithic blocks. Inside, there was a large residential building divided into various rooms, including a room for receiving guests, a kitchen equipped with a fireplace and cooking slabs, and a pantry.

The central structure included a two-story tower, useful for controlling the surrounding territory, up to the sea, only 5 km away. Another building, 16 meters long and 8 meters wide, served as a warehouse for agricultural products from the nearby countryside. Archaeological investigations conducted by the University of Salento, led by Prof. Francesco d’Andria, revealed that the settlement extended over a surface area of 5,000 square meters.

In an adjacent area, a building dating back to the 6th-7th century AD was discovered, as evidenced by the ceramic materials found. The structure, measuring 12 metres by 7 metres, represents important evidence of occupation in the Late Antique period. Furthermore, post holes used for the construction of huts in the proto-historic period were found, underlining the historical importance of the site.

Access to the settlement is marked by an entrance door and a transit control room. Pozzo Seccato, located just outside the town of Acquarica di Lecce (Vernole), was abandoned by the Messapian tribes at the beginning of the 1st century AD, but continued to be frequented over time.

Otranto is a historic and fascinating city located on the Adriatic coast of Salento, in Puglia. It is the easternmost municipality in Italy, as well as an important maritime reference point, as it is located at the beginning of the Otranto Channel, which serves as a link between the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea. Its strategic position has given the city a particular importance since ancient times, making it a center of trade and cultural exchanges.

The name Otranto derives from the Latin Hydruntum, associated with the short Idro stream that flows in the southern part of the urban center. This stream was once a long and navigable river.

The history of Otranto is rich and varied, with origins dating back to prehistoric times. Initially inhabited by the Messapians, the city came under Roman rule, becoming an important maritime municipality. During the Roman period it stood out as one of the most crucial ports in Puglia, promoting trade and craftsmanship, particularly in the processing of purple and fabrics.

In the Middle Ages, Otranto established itself as a focal point between East and West, hosting a significant Jewish community and becoming a center of culture and knowledge. On August 11, 1480, the city suffered a devastating attack by the Turkish forces of Mehmet II. This event led to the tragic massacre of about 800 men, who were beheaded for not denying their Christian faith, an episode commemorated by the Holy Martyrs of Otranto.

The town is renowned for its extraordinary wealth of historical and cultural monuments that tell its long and complex history, starting from the Cathedral of the Annunziata, built between 1080 and 1088, is famous for its magnificent floor mosaic created by the monk Pantaleone. The architectural structure is a fine example of Romanesque style with Byzantine influences.

The Aragonese Castle, commissioned by Alfonso of Aragon between 1485 and 1498, is a majestic defensive construction that has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries, while still respectfully maintaining its original charm. Inside the walls there is a delightful civic museum.

The Church of St. Peter is a notable example of Byzantine art, with frescoes dating back to various periods, dating from the 10th to the 14th century.

The Church of the Madonna dell’Altomare, built in a panoramic position, features decorations inspired by the sea, reflecting the city’s maritime tradition.

Otranto is the seat of an archiepiscopal diocese and has a community actively involved in the preservation of local traditions. During the year, the city hosts various festivities, the most significant of which is the celebration of the Holy Martyrs, which takes place on August 14. This celebration represents a moment of great spiritual and cultural importance for the inhabitants.
