The main instrument of the pizzica salentina is the tambourine. It is a particular tambourine, composed of a wooden circle on which a skin membrane is placed. On the wooden circle there are slits with metal rattles inside. The rattles, with each stroke, emit a particular sound, recalling the sound of some Indian instruments. The tambourine represents on a symbolic level the concept of the unconscious. The circle is the perfect geometric figure and represents the cyclical nature of life. In it it is not possible to distinguish a beginning or an end.
